Providence St. Joseph Hospital is asking a judge to dismiss a lawsuit brought by California’s DA. The claims regard an alleged denial, due to religion, of potentially life-saving emergency care for a woman suffering a miscarriage. The hospital argues that enforcing abortion-related requirements would infringe on its religious freedom as a Catholic institution and is disputing the legal applicability of the cited laws. As a hearing is scheduled for Jan. 27, a separate lawsuit alleges similar practices. Providence St. Joseph in Eureka now hosts the only birthing center in Humboldt County. *** T-S

The locally shot Leonardo DiCaprio movie The Battle of Baktan Cross is scheduled for release this August. *** LoCo

Our US rep Jared Huffman remains Congress' sole Humanist as Christianity continues to decline. While 62% of the US population identifies as Christian which is down from 78% in 2007, the new Congress lists 87% of lawmakers as Christian. That’s a slight decline from 88% in the previous Congressional session and 92% a decade ago. As Jared continues to be a rarity, Humanism emphasizes reason, ethics, and human welfare without reliance on religion. He recently won reelection with a whopping 72 percent of the vote. *** Pew
