Eureka cops revealed the suspected ‘whip-its’ user in a vehicular killing. Officers say 30-year-old Maria Cuevas admitted to using nitrous oxide or ‘whip-its’ before killing a pedestrian with her car and crashing into other cars and a building. This happened on I Street in Eureka as a calm scene there turned into a nightmare. Condolences to the victim’s family. *** RHBB
Cal Poly Humboldt’s president is stepping down after his Arcata campus received national attention during pro-Palestinian protests. Tom Jackson Jr. will be remembered as the university’s first black president who ushered the school away from its former and smaller Humboldt State era while turning declining enrollment around. He also steered the ship during the COVID years. He’ll transition into a professor role while the university works to entice its next president. Arcata approved 139 acres for high-density housing in its southwestern Creamery District. The Arcata City Council advanced the Gateway Area Plan, and they say part of this will be addressing department needs for fire officials to handle the added responsibility. *** Loco [The area is now greenlit for buildings as tall as eight stories and up to 3,500 new residential units. -MC]
Two people were arrested after a horrible 4th of July fireworks fiasco in Crescent City. The mishandling of illegal fireworks reportedly injured 14 people including critical injuries to a currently-hospitalized 3-year-old boy, a toddler. The suspects are Crescent City residents who fled the scene but were arrested later. This was supposed to be a fun celebration at the beach but it turned into devastation and an excruciating experience for this toddler as his life is on the line in the hospital. *** RHBB / GoFundMe
A swimmer in the Eel River in SoHum found likely human remains. Someone from Redway found what initially seemed an animal bone but later it was revealed to likely be part of a human leg. The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office and others were scouring the area with cadaver dogs. *** RHBB / LA Times
(UPDATE) A popular tattoo artist received an over 10-year prison sentence for killing a former intimate partner. He was convicted of voluntary manslaughter using a gun with a removed serial number. In McKinleyville, he called the police saying a woman refused to leave his home and then he fatally shot her. She was intoxicated but unarmed. The jury did not buy his self-defense argument. The victim, Mia Felder, was a photographer, artist, writer, and volunteer. *** RHBB
A local group on Facebook targeting male cheaters and abusers is receiving attention. "Are We Dating the Same Guy?" has almost 4,000 members, sharing dirt and red flags about local dudes. The rules say contributors need proof or posts will be removed, while critics wonder about ethical concerns, libel, and the privacy of those who even receive positive comments. *** Loco
Humboldt County’s top reps denounced political violence after a bullet missed Trump's head at a rally. U.S. Congressman Jared Huffman said “...No matter what your politics are, we must all condemn this and put an end to the violence,”, while State Senator Mike McGuire said the event and others like it should serve as a “wake-up call” to stand united in condemning all political violence. An innocent spectator at the Trump event lost his life protecting his family before the shooter was killed by Secret Service snipers.

Eureka’s Tasty Hub is set to host food trucks and vendors along with a commissary kitchen. It’ll be a lively hub where cooks can rent the kitchen and where food trucks and food stands can post up in Eureka a block and a half north of the McDonald’s on the northern end of town. *** Loco
Cal Poly Humboldt soccer is offering free entry to regular season home games this season. That means we’ll have a chance to bring bigger crowds and positive energy to these teams playing at a higher Division II level for free. That’s possible thanks to Danco, and games begin next month. *** CPH
Summers are big for this Cal Poly Humboldt export who trains some of the NFL’s best offensive linemen. Duke Manyweather played for Humboldt State and went on to be one of the experts leading the OL Masterminds Summit, which helps NFL players, draft hopefuls, and coaches. Duke recently saw the event’s 7th rendition as he continues to promote an associated training app for all offensive linemen via Android or iOS. With other alumni such as current NFL star Alex Cappa, Cal Poly Humboldt (formerly known as Humboldt State) notoriously ended its storied football program after its 2018 season.
A reminder that one of rock music’s most talented vocalists grew up in Eureka. In a recent post in the Reddit group Metal For The Masses, someone asked for thoughts on Faith No More and Mr. Bungle frontman Mike Patton. “Best vocalist ever,” wrote one top commenter, “GOD,” wrote another, and “genius,” chimed an additional contributor. In terms of criticism, one commenter was complimentary of Mike’s abilities but said his passion for exploring a very wide variety of genres may hold him back from having a completely revered discography. *** Reddit
